The Dandy Warhols’ 25th anniversary tour is the ultimate high-school reunion

It’s a shame because this was always a band that offered a groove and a point of view: Taylor-Taylor’s patented form of queasy nostalgia has improved with age, especially for a crowd who know the drugs aren’t as fun as they used to be.

The Dandys kicked off with the mystic waves of new single Forever but then settled into extended versions of several hits enveloped in a fuzzy feedback hug. Veronica Mars’ theme song We Used to be Friends was served up surprisingly early, its slinky insults dialled up in a jumbly, swamp rock rendition, while they blitzed through bar room boogie Get Off in record time.

Crowd pleasers included the still-glorious Not if you Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Godless and the smartarse earworm Bohemian Like You. The party balloons dropped from the ceiling for Every Day Should Be a Holiday were a nice touch.

McCabe remains one of the coolest women on earth, whether bringing the groove with one hand in her pocket, throwing shapes or getting the crowd to sing happy birthday to her teenage daughter. She closed the two-hour set on her own, bringing home an extended medley before promising to meet people at midnight at the afterparty. She’s the one you’d want to find in your corner at any high school reunion.
