Melbourne Cup 2019: Celebrities inside the Birdcage

Before long the mining magnate connected with a fellow billionaire, cardboard mogul Anthony Pratt, and his sister Heloise, along with her partner, musician Jon Stevens. The Rinehart and Pratt parties lunched together before moving on to find their respective spots to watch the Cup.

By then, the crowds had surged and the marquees began to burst at the seam; indeed Rinehart had left her run a little too late for a trackside spot and was last spotted with Kerri-Anne Kennerley in the back of a tent watching the big race on a television screen.

Inside the Tabcorp marquee Bill Shorten and his wife Chloe were looking decidedly more relaxed than their pre-federal election appearance in the same marquee last year.

But just as there is no such thing as a free lunch, a day in a corporate marquee comes with its own conditions for some. Upon arriving at the gumnut-festooned Lexus marquee, the much-hyped star of the Birdcage, Lady Kitty Spencer, was under strict instruction by her car-maker sponsor to pose under the marquee’s ‘Lexus’ branding.

“They wouldn’t let her have her photo taken anywhere but the media wall,” a fellow Birdcage spy revealed.

Sadly, her overzealous corporate overseers managed to constrain her true appeal. A racegoer who crossed paths with Lady Spencer, who is the niece of Princess Diana, said she was a breath of fresh air.

“Kitty was delightful – inside and out, she is a gorgeous person.”

When it came to the fashion stakes, Sydney socialites Kate Waterhouse and Nadia Fairfax made the ultimate fashion faux pas when they dressed almost identically in Little Bo Peep-inspired getups – Fairfax’s complete with a bonnet.

Hollywood heavyweight and The Masked Singer judge Lohan held court inside Network 10’s marquee, surrounded by an entourage of groupies including Yummy Mummies reality stars Jane Scandizzo and Rachel Watts.

Lohan seemingly failed to follow etiquette when ducking inside the G.H. Mumm marquee: the French champagne wasn’t first pick for the Parent Trap actress, who instead requested watered-down spirts.

“Lindsay’s drink of choice was [a] double-shot vodka and soda,” a spy from the champagne marquee revealed. “She had people from her entourage bringing drinks to her so she didn’t have to wait around at the bar,” the source added.

Also along for the occasion was Lohan’s younger sister Ali, who recently made headlines when her sister revealed she’d dated The Masked Singer winner Cody Simpson for some time in 2018, prior to his current relationship with Miley Cyrus.
