SBS drama Safe Harbour wins international Emmy for best mini-series

SBS drama Safe Harbour has been named best mini-series at the 47th International Emmy Awards in New York.

The four-part thriller, which first aired on SBS in early 2018, clinched the award ahead of three other nominees. Its competitors included Brazilian murder mystery If I Close My Eyes Now, Indian short-film series Lust Stories and Hungarian film Trezor.

Safe Harbour was one of only a handful of Australian productions to be in the running at this year’s awards. Other local nominees included quirky web series Wrong Kind of Black and ABC drama The Cry, a British co-production. The Cry’s Jenna Coleman missed out on best performance by an actress, while Wrong Kind of Black was bested by Brazilian show Hack the City in the short-form series category.

It’s not the first time Safe Harbour has won accolades. Glendyn Ivin won best director for a TV drama at the 2018 AACTA Awards. That same year, Hazem Shammas nabbed outstanding supporting actor at the Logies. The series has aired on streaming service Hulu in the United States and has also been broadcast on the BBC in the United Kingdom.
