“We have built one of the sickest free standing tents. I never dreamed of having a circus tent full of strippers… but I guess it’s now one of my dreams,” he said. “It’s a dance show you can actually touch.

“For about nine months in Tampa I was an actual stripper. Then I became an actor. I always knew I wanted to tell the story of this weird, strange subculture.”

The production’s co-director and choreographer Alison Faulk said the live show would be a completely different experience to the films. Ms Faulk has previously choreographed for the likes of Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Missy Elliott.

“The guys go up to the second level and dance right in front of you,” she said.

Tatum adapted the film franchise for the stage and acts as director of Magic Mike Live but does not star in the production. Faulk serves as his co-director. Like the films, the stage show aims to redefine what “male entertainment” can look like – with the show opening with a male MC who gets kicked-off stage in favour of a female host.

Magic Mike is a 2012 American comedy film starring Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey who play a group of male strippers. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning more than $200 million at the international box office off the back of a $10 million budget. A sequel, Magic Mike XXL, was released in 2015.

Magic Mike Live will kick-off in Melbourne on Tuesday, May 26. The Sydney production is slated for November 2020. Patrons must be at least 18 years old to attend.
